Brazil strawberry prices steady as neutral varieties lead

Strawberry prices in Brazil remained stable during recent weeks. Direct sales to consumers noted price variations between approximately $3.00 and $5.60 per kilo, while wholesale prices, including interactions with intermediaries and Supply Centers (Ceasas), fluctuated from $3.00 to $4.00 per kilo.

In the Pelotas region, strawberry production, focusing on neutral-day varieties, continued at a consistent rate despite smaller fruit sizes. Producers have seen increased demand, although pricing remains unchanged. This period saw the ongoing receipt and planting of imported seedlings. For those cultivating directly in the soil, efforts were directed towards bed preparation and plant pruning. Weather conditions have been conducive to effective rooting and the health of new seedlings.

Meanwhile, the Santa Rosa region observed the flowering of early short-day varieties, while neutral-day varieties remain in the vegetative stage, producing stolons as anticipated. Overall, crop progress aligns with expected developmental stages.

The climate was advantageous for strawberry production in Caxias do Sul, though vigilance against diseases, like powdery mildew, is necessary. Effective management is crucial for achieving a harvest meeting expected volume and quality standards.

In related developments, Unesp researchers in Araraquara, São Paulo, have created a bioplastic from bacterial cellulose, pectin, and coconut oil. This innovation extends strawberry freshness from 3 to 8 days, potentially reducing refrigeration costs and product losses. This technology, with startup support, is expected to impact the market favorably.
