Southern hemisphere table grape exports to grow by 11% in the 2024/25 season

The southern hemisphere, Mexico, and India exported 2.4 million tons of table grapes, equivalent to 289 million 8.2 kg boxes, in the 2024/25 season. This is 11% more volume than in the previous season. This growth was driven by the greater dynamism of the three main exporters in the southern hemisphere: Peru, Chile, and South Africa.

Peru led shipments with 690,000 tons, 33% more than in the previous season. This rebound is attributed to the recovery after the damage caused by El NiƱo and to the expansion of the cultivated area, which reached 23,320 certified hectares, with a 4% year-on-year growth.

Chile also recorded a positive evolution, with a 5% increase that allowed it to export 556 thousand tons (67.8 million boxes). Favorable weather conditions in the regions authorized to export to the United States under the Systems Approach system, Atacama, Coquimbo, and Valparaiso, were key to this performance. South Africa closed a historic season with 350,630 tons exported (+5%), equivalent to 42.8 million boxes.

As for destination markets, the United States faced a contrasting situation compared to the previous cycle. In 2023/24, prices reached record levels due to low supply, inflation, and the increased presence of new varieties. However, in 2024/25, the recovery of Peruvian production generated an oversupply that put downward pressure on prices. In the seedless white grape segment, prices fell from 7.6 to 1.9 dollars per kilo between weeks 4 and 9, affecting port logistics due to the accumulation of stocks and slower turnover than arrivals.

China's market is increasingly self-sufficient and competitive. Improved post-harvest technologies have increased the availability of local supply, reducing the margin for imports. In this context, while the total supply of seedless white grapes in the southern hemisphere fell by 27%, only shipments from Peru and Australia achieved good prices in the Jiangnan market. In contrast, the results for Chile, South Africa, and India were less favourable.

South Africa remains Europe's main supplier. It led the white seedless grape category with 13 million boxes (+8%), followed by Peru with 11 million (+58%), and Chile with 2.9 million (+85%). South Africa also led the red seedless grape category with 14 million boxes (+2%), followed by Chile with 4.4 million (+47%), and Peru with 3.5 million (+40%). The southern hemisphere's total red seedless grape supply increased by 14%.
