Fuentes Farms recalls open field cucumbers over Salmonella risk

Fuentes Farms of McAllen, Texas, is recalling 71 boxes of fresh cucumbers due to the potential presence of Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream, leading to more severe conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.

The affected cucumbers were distributed in Texas through local vendors at flea markets in the McAllen and Alamo areas. The recalled product is labeled under the Fuentes Farms brand, Lot Number 357, and packed in 40-pound, 1-1/9-bushel boxes. The boxes are marked "vegetables" and have a black background.

As of this notice, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. It is not linked to any current foodborne illness outbreaks. However, out of an abundance of caution, Fuentes Farms LLC is notifying all customers and urging anyone who may have purchased or sold cucumbers from Lot #357—particularly between May 31 and June 3—to immediately discontinue sale or consumption of the product.

The recall was initiated following a routine sampling program conducted by the company, which revealed the presence of Salmonella in the finished product. Fuentes Farms has since halted production and distribution of the affected cucumbers as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the company continue to investigate the source of contamination.
