$6.7M meth seized in tomatillo shipment

On June 10, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility intercepted a shipment containing alleged methamphetamine concealed within a load manifested as tomatillos. The estimated street value of the narcotics is $6,740,100.

CBP officers encountered a tractor-trailer entering from Mexico and referred it for further inspection. The inspection involved non-intrusive imaging equipment and a CBP canine unit. A subsequent physical search uncovered 166 packages of suspected methamphetamine, weighing a total of 753.98 pounds, hidden within the shipment.

"The cargo environment continues to be a top choice for trafficking organizations, but our CBP officers—along with our tools and technology—are a force to be reckoned with," said Carlos Rodriguez, Port Director for the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.

CBP OFO seized both the narcotics and the vehicle. Homeland Security Investigations has initiated a criminal investigation into the case.
